Seattle Talent Agencies

Seattle Talent Agencies

Since the questions I’m most often asked are about talent agencies and how to find the right one, I lead this section with that category. Below, you will find a list of Seattle-area, talent agencies, what type of actors they represent and how to approach them. They are all different and operate in different ways. I recommend sending your headshot and resume’ with appropriate business cover letter expressing your interest in finding possible representation with them. There is information on how each agency likes to have talent submit themselves for possible representation. Wherever possible, include a DVD reel or if the approach they request is digital, sending a link to your reel. Meet with whomever shows interest in meeting after seeing your shots and resume’.

I recommend using the following criteria for proper selection: First, that agent should be VERY interested in signing you. The more interested, the more they’ll promote you. However, if they’re interested because they want to sell you a bunch of classes or picture packages, tread lightly and beware. You want an agent who’s incentivized to find you work. Legitimate talent agencies make their money by charging a commission on the work opportunities they find for you. Industry standard is 10% on union work and 20% on non-union work. If they want to sell you class and picture packages, that’s not necessarily a bad thing as these things can be valuable and every actor should have training and proper, professional pictures. But if the agent makes their money PRIMARILY though these venues, they’re obviously less motivated to find you work because they’re already making money with the packages. If they think they want to sign you, it should hopefully be because they think you’re marketable just as you are right now. If they think you need classes, then they’re essentially saying that you’re really not marketable in your current state and the responsible thing to do is to turn you down for representation and recommend more training before you submit again. They can extend the opportunity of THEIR training and classes to you if they offer them. But it should really be a separation of “church and state” so to speak so you’re not coerced into classes just so you can get them to sign on as your agent. Likewise, the pictures should be at a rate commensurate with what you’d be charged outside the agency so that they’re not taking advantage of the fact that you need an agent. Also, if you already have professional headshots, they should either accept them as they are or be able to give cogent reasons why those shots aren’t acceptable such that you need new ones. I’ve also supplied a list of some great photographers in the area. Also, see my answer on our FAQ page on the myth of the “Best Agency”. Good luck!
